Chapter 13

Sam ran flat-out as fast as he could. With the sound of gunfire fading, he and the others had scrambled down Rabbit Rock in record time.

The she-wolves weren’t communicating. Neither one answered the messages he and Logan kept sending. Still, Sam sensed Rayne’s presence somewhere not too far away. His racing heart and Were intuition told him she might have gone quiet because she could be hurt.

What about Macy?

Every Desperado pack member could have predicted that Macy was talented enough to take on a lot of problems. He had seen this a hundred times. He wasn’t so sure about a demon though, and where such a thing would leave Rayne.

He, Logan, and Dan didn’t slow down when they reached the side of the hill that butted up against Rabbit Rock like a slightly shorter conjoined twin. Barely fifteen minutes had gone by since the she-wolves had fallen silent. Possibly the quiet was self-imposed and on purpose. However, the only way for the two females to have gone west or south from Rabbit Rock would have been over or around this next hill.

Sam’s heart was heavy with dread. In spite of what Rayne had told them, they hadn’t found a demon or anyone else on top of Rabbit Rock. They hadn’t seen anyone escaping. They had no idea where everyone had gone.

A new vow encompassed his thoughts. If he found Rayne, he would never let her go.

After repeating this to himself, Sam and the others began to work their way up the next hill. They hadn’t gone far when Sam heard Macy shouting. Pivoting sharply, they began the backward journey toward Macy’s voice.

When Macy’s second communication came, also in a loud voice, Logan called for Sam and Dan to stop. Sam didn’t want to wait. He was going to tear this land apart until he discovered the reason for Rayne’s silence. But he quickly came to understand what was wrong, and what had caused Logan’s warning.

Macy’s voice held a hollow and emotionless tone Sam hadn’t heard before. She hadn’t used their Were messaging channel, which would have been expected. Logan, who knew Macy better than anyone, had also picked up on this.

“It’s a trick,” Logan warned.

Nothing on the ground below them moved. Macy didn’t appear. Rayne was nowhere to be seen.

“A demon’s kind of trick?” Dan asked, his voice pitched low.

The ripple of uncertainty running through Logan was contagious. Logan messaged Macy again, with no response, which made it a sure bet that Macy had not been the one who had shouted to them.

“Fucking demon,” Logan said.

“Anybody actually know how to kill one?” Dan added.

Cradling her injured arm, Rayne crawled on her knees over patches of rock and trampled earth, each gained inch intensely painful and hard won. When she finally bumped into a jutting wall of solid stone, she used the rough surface to steady herself. Willing her body to comply with her demand for strength, she was gradually able to pull herself up to her feet.

The injured arm hurt badly, but she had to shelve the pain.
